In order to become a property owner in Portugal, foreign nationals need to get a Número de Contribuinte (Tax Number) from a local Finanças (finance office). The usual rate for a deposit in Portugal is around 10% of the agreed sale price. It is also important to remember, that it is the buyer’s responsibility to hire a solicitor to read through the promissory agreement before signing takes place. The good news is that Portuguese banks are happy to lend anything up to 70% of the value of the property to non-nationals.
