The diverse landscape and culture Portugal has to offer has been a major draw for sun-seeking home buyers for decades. Rolling green vineyards; cosmopolitan cities; stretches of picturesque beaches and the Atlantic within easy reach of most of the country.
It has something to offer every type of property hunter too, from its permanently popular Algarve coast in the south, to the more up-and-coming Costa de Prata in the north. With development projects continuing to boom nationwide, there’s never been a better time to invest in the Alentejo.

What does an expat need in order to buy in Portugal?
In order to become a property owner in Portugal, foreign nationals need to get a Número de Contribuinte (Tax Number) from a local Finanças (finance office). The usual rate for a deposit in Portugal is around 10% of the agreed sale price. It is also important to remember, that it is the buyer’s responsibility to hire a solicitor to read through the promissory agreement before signing takes place. The good news is that Portuguese banks are happy to lend anything up to 70% of the value of the property to non-nationals.
